You knew this was coming.
If you're not interested in football, you can skip this post, except #7, which affects us all.

Thoughts on Pittsburgh vs. Indianapolis:
1. Oh my god.
2. OH MY GOD.
3. See # 1 and 2. Phew.

4. I know there are tons of people who hate Peyton Manning and wanted to see the Colts fall (including several of my Patriots friends who reluctantly cheered for the Steelers today only because they were the lesser of two evils). But you know what? I like Peyton. I love Tony Dungy. And the Colts have had a great season. So I went into this game thinking that of course I don't want anyone to knock the Steelers out of the playoffs, but if someone had to, I was going with them because I respect them the most. Basically, I made this game into a double-edged sword. Either we lost it and I was semi-okay with that, or we won it and I would be much more angry if another team beat us later. Now, clearly, the only way I'll be happy is with the old "one for the thumb." Please and thank you.

5. Startling fact of the day: Troy Polamalu is five days younger than me?!?!

6. When I thought Bettis lost the game for us, I'll admit it, I definitely almost cried. BETTIS? My very favorite player? BETTIS? He who didn't have a single fumble all year? DID HE REALLY JUST DO THAT?! But more than that, I was sad thinking that if we lost, that may very well have been the last play of his career. And for a guy who will go down as one of the all-time greats, he didn't deserve to end it with a fumble that cost the team the playoffs. Thank god for Mr. Kicker Whose Name I Can't Spell, and Mr. Roethlisberger Whose Name I Can (see #8). True to form, when asked about it after the game, Bettis took the blame, saying something like, "That shouldn't happen; that's my job," and then gave credit to his teammates for saving the day. LOVE HIM.

7. My cellphone's predictive text function does not recognize the word "crap." HELLOOOOO?!

8. I was glad it was Ben who made that "tackle" that pretty much saved the game after Bettis lost it. Ben's got plenty of haters, and to them I say: Hate him all you want, but don't you dare say he's not a good player. I would like to think he made that tackle just for them. haha. I was also glad that after joking that you don't often hear interviewers ask him about his "big tackle," he, too, gave credit to his teammates and pointed out how uncharacteristic that was of Bettis. Don't let anyone forget that you're great and Bettis is THE BEST. That's the way to do it, Ben.

9. I love how when Mom called at the end of the game, there was all this screaming in the background, but it turned out there were only four people there. CRAZIES!

10. Sometimes, Bill Cowher reminds me of Mike Evans. And seriously, the only way I could love Mike Evans any more is if he were a Cougar alum, so that's cool.

11. Even though the announcers wouldn't stop harping on it (rightfully so), let us never speak of those two egregious pro-Colts calls again. The win was clearly offered by the football gods as atonement, and I am happy with that.

7. I can't do the predictive thing anymore because my phone doesn't understand the way I talk!

7. I tried to write "Hi Andrea" to my sister and it put "Hi Bacon." I call her that.
Now I have to cheer for Ben. I wanted the Pats to win because Tom Brady is a nice guy. Peyton Manning made me angry during the end of the season when he wasn't playing and when a reporter asked, he made a snide remark that they only wanted to know for their fantasy football team. So Peyton and his five-head lost some points there.
Also, I'm from the original Colts country and you know how some people in the south are still fighting the Civil War? In Baltimore people are STILL bitter about the Colts' middle of the night move to Indy.
The point of all this is that Ben is the only QB left whom I like, even if he isn't as dreamy as my boy Tom.

Yeah, Peyton's said some stupid things, and he likes to take the credit for winning but blame his teammates when he loses... But he's good. (Or was for most of the season.) And I can respect that.

And I don't dislike Brady either, but he's got his own series of soundbites to annoy me, the most recent being his thing about how everyone was "disrespecting" the Patriots, blah blah blah. Like, dude, you've won three of the last four Superbowls, but that doesn't give you a free pass from people pointing out that your team wasn't as good this year. In fact, maybe it's more reason for them to point it out. Any team can take a downturn, but the real news is when it's the reigning champ.

I also think it's funny how Boston/New England seems to have this between-sports amnesia. All this "respect us because we've won in the past" or "clearly, we are a dynasty" stuff reminds me of exactly what Sox fans hate about the Yankees.

So yeah, I don't know what my point is. So many athletes losing so many likability points with me.

I of course just woke up and after writing my post about the (in)famous game, I had to see what my favorite fellow Steeler fan on LJ had to say!

I didn't like Payton coming out after the game and talking about "the protection problems"... if he wasn't a robotic QB who relied on timing patterns to do his thing, he would have tried to scramble out of some of those situations. As in the San Diego game, if you put a good rush on him and throw off his rhythm, he can't handle it.

I don't know if you watched any of the pregame shows, but there was this one asshat on ESPN who predicted BOTH GAMES WRONG. He was talking like this voice of authority, saying the Colts would blow out the Steelers by 20 points... the world was against us, but we won anyway!!!

And that goddamn ref who blew the intercetion call should never be allowed to ref another NFL, college, or high school game again. I really and truly believe he tried to throw that game.

Yeah, did you see my reply to [info]mglory80 above? Peyton definitely has some responsibility issues. But I can't help liking him for some reason. Maybe it's because he's such a DORK, and if I saw him on the street I'd think "boring business guy" not "big-shot NFL quarterback." Or maybe I just love that "D! CAF!" commercial.

Going to read your post now...

It's all based on the D! CAF! commercial for me.

Oh yeah, and OMG.

I'm really digging the playoff commercials! I like the one beer commercial about the guy who has to do the unthinkable things, like go shopping for clothes with his girlfriend during when there's a game on- and he passes out and the beer people have to revive him! I could so see tammy doing that to me as well... although not during a Steelers game!

I really think that while you guys didn't have the refs on your side (I'm not really sure what else Troy Polamalu had to do for the refs to have called that an interception...hand stand? cartwheel? ballerina twirl?) you did have God. I think God said to himself, how can I let the bus be responsible for this? How can I let a man with such a great smile fumble on the 1 yard line and lose the game for his team?

I don't remember the last time I actually screamed out loud at a play in a sporting event. Nothing shocks me anymore. After the 4th down sack on Manning I was putting my coat on to go out and get some food (since the game was over) and decided to watch a little more while I bundled up. And then "OH MY GOD!!....HOLY #!$@ING $&!+!...OH MY GOD!".

God must be a fan of those asthma commericals. Or maybe He read the interview in Outtakes by Dan Patrick where Jerome talks about what a nerd his "pops" is.

Because seriously, how could you see those two things and not love that guy?
